Even Babies Can Communicate When They Learn Sign Language

When Leah was born, her parents marvelled at how she was able to nap through practice sessions for Rachel's Folk-Rock group, they were so happy to have such an easy time with Leah's infancy. When they learned that she slept so soundly because she couldn't hear the music at all, their first thoughts were that they would need to learn a whole new language. The set out to find information and began to learn ASL (American Sign Language) as a necessary task - but who was going to teach Leah?

Leah joined them every session as her parents read and practiced between themselves. Leah was still an infant but she showed some definite interest in what was going on, and seemed to pick up the signs easier than her parents did. Perhaps because she had no other way to communicate and she could sense that they were communicating when they practiced their signing. She began signing to let them know when she was hungry or tired. She was still too young to understand that everyone didn't communicate this way and she picked it up along with her family as naturally as hearing children learn to speak - but at an earlier age.

The first CDs were made to help Leah's other relatives learn some basics about sign language so they would be able to communicate with her. From one CD for family learning, the word spread and grew. Rachel used her music background to put together catchy tunes to help people learn and retain their lessons. In time it grew to include a regular television show "Signing Time" on PBS. Educators all over have picked up on this series as the best way to quickly and easily teach people sign language.
