If your family is drinking tap water you may have concerns about the
taste or appearance of your local water supply. Most areas have water
that meets the minimum requirements of health standards, but more and
more people are going the extra step and using some type of water
filtration system at home to improve and control the quality of their
drinking water. Pure water is better for your health and improves the
taste of foods you cook. You would never drink bleach, or add it to
a recipe but the same chlorine is used to kill bacteria in water
treatment plants and it remains in the tapwater of your home unless
you take that extra step to ensure that your water is pure and clean.
Is bottled water better? Bottling plants start with the same quality
tap water you get and do some filtering of it so it should be better;
but bottling plants are not required to test their final product to
the same standards of public water treatment plants, and their test
results are not made public. Another problem with bottled water is
the enormous amount of solid waste produced to distribute their
product - and over 1.5 million barrels of oil per year just to make
those bottles. Think about that. Sure, some gets recycled but most
(80%) of the empty containers end up in landfills. Over 38 billion
bottles a year do not get recycled. This is why it just makes sense
to use a home filtration system,
even if it is only for your drinking water and even if it is only
for one faucet.
A small pitcher
type filter is a big improvement; in the long run a home filtration
system will produce better water, more of it and at a lower cost.
