This old house! Every year we try to decide what we can fit into our budget to
keep our home in good shape. Houses seem like they will last forever when
they're new! Just a few years of summers and winters can make you wish you
hadn't settled for "Those" windows though. They don't look right, never have
but in the excitement of buying the house a few minor things seem more
acceptable than they get to be after you live with them for awhile.
Last year we needed to paint the house and decided that rather than painting
(again!) to just add siding instead. It cost less that what we would have spent
on painting for just a few years. Last winter's heating bills showed me that we
did the right thing! Siding makes a big difference in your heating and cooling
bills - and instead of needing new paint again in just a year or two, the
siding still looks like new. It came with a 20 year written guarantee so we
don't even have to think about painting for a very long time.
Where do you find the right contractor when you need to have home repairs or a
remodeling project? Well, you can ask your friends and family - if you want to
risk getting into disagreements that is. We found out the hard way that there
are many pitfalls to asking friends and family members to recommend competent
help. First of all the project that they had done for my brother wasn't at all
like what we needed doing, and believe me, contractors are specialists! The
contractor who put new gutters and soffit at my brother's house did a good job,
but when we talked to them about siding they right away explained that they did
not do siding, they only did gutters and trim. Seems like the same kind of work
to me, but after wasting their time (and ours) we could see that they had no
interest in the work we needed done; they had a very busy schedule just
replacing rain gutters.
My neighbor tried to recommend his son who was just starting out and that led
to some hard feelings because I didn't want my house to be the first experiment
in his new career - would you? Well my next step was to go through the local
phonebook listings. Bigger ad, better contractor, right? Wrong. A very
disappointing series of trials and errors with pushy salesmen dropping in and
some folks who couldn't give even one local reference. My home may not be a
mansion, but I'm a little choosy about who I want working up close and personal
with my family and my home.
A local realtor finally let me in on his secret: A service that he uses for
clients to get their projects priced right, done right and done right away. The
difference in working with professionals! We got to meet several contractors
and talk things over with them; the materials to be used, when exactly would
the work start and more important, when exactly would it be finished? Could we
get quotes for this AND that so we could decide for ourselves which type of
materials we should go with? Will they leave my place a mess for us to clean up
or is all removal included when something gets replaced? They actually seemed
eager to answer our questions.

Back to the windows. There are three double-hung vinyl windows in my living
room that I didn't like on first sight and have come to really dislike every
time I want to do anything with the livingroom. I just finished filling out
their form and before the end of the month I plan to have gorgeous new windows
installed - and a whole new outlook from my home.
